Medical researchers gave bad news for obese people. According to a study published in the journal The Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, people who are overweight are at higher risk of serious illness after being infected with the coronavirus. Even the risk of admission to the intensive care unit of the hospital is high.
Researchers at the University of Oxford say this is the first time such a large-scale study has been conducted on the risk of coronary heart disease.
The study was conducted on more than 69 million people living in the UK. The study included data on more than 20,000 corona patients who were hospitalized or died during the first wave of coronavirus infection.
Researchers say that those who weigh more than 23 kg per square meter on the BMI (Weight by Height) index have a higher risk of serious coronary heart disease. In the BMI index, the risk of hospitalization is 5 percent higher for every one unit of weight gain. And the risk of admission to intensive care centers is 10 percent higher.
Researchers also say that overweight people are not the only ones who are at risk. People who are underweight and have coronary heart disease also have a higher risk of getting sick.
Research has shown that people between the ages of 20 and 39 have a higher risk of coronary heart disease. However, those over the age of 60 are less likely to be overweight. People over the age of 60 have a lower risk of serious coronary heart disease due to weight.
Carmen Piernas, lead author of the study at Oxford University, said that even a small amount of weight gain increases the risk of coronary complications. The greater the weight gain, the greater the risk of complications after being infected with corona.
Those under the age of 40 have a higher risk of corona complications due to being overweight, Piernes added. However, in the case of people over the age of 60, weight has little to do with corona complications. For this reason, those who are overweight should be vaccinated on a priority basis, researchers say.
From January 24 to April 30 last year, researchers analyzed and researched data on people infected with corona.
